If you’ve just gotten GTA 5 for free from the Epic Games Store and are launching into GTA Online for the first time, get ready for some large differences. GTA Online is a packed multiplayer experience with almost seven years of updates. It’s a big, complicated game with an absolutely dizzying array of vehicles, businesses, and activities to explore.
Most of all, you are sharing the world with up to 29 other players, which takes a long time to get used to. GTA Online will consume as many hours as you want, with deep progression systems, loads of expensive properties to buy, and tons of vehicles to collect.
Over the years, we’ve spent quite a few hours with GTA Online and wanted to share our tips on how newcomers can play the game without having a bad time. Hope you find this useful.
1. Find friends, get used to the game and increase your rank
The key with GTA Online is finding friends that you can play with on a regular basis. It makes so many in-game activities easier, more lucrative, and more fun. Playing GTA Online solo is possible, but it’s half the experience in many ways.
When you start GTA Online, you create a character, do a tutorial, and go wild in Los Santos. The GTA 5 Epic Giveaway comes with the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack, an exceptional selection of goodies to get you started in GTA Online. This gives you a number of free items including a suite of weapons and vehicles to use. Rockstar Games explains what comes with the pack Here. Note, however, that we played GTA Online long before this pack existed and cannot fully guarantee how this affects the first part of the online experience.
You also get an Executive Office, a Gun Shooting Bunker, and a Biker Gang Hideout, all of which offer different ways to make you more money from the start. You can access the activities in each of these locations from the laptop that you will find inside each building.
GTA’s Epic Free Edition will also grant you $ 1 million in free in-game currency, although it will take around a week to show up on your account. We think you should spend $ 200,000 of that for an in-game apartment that has the ability to initiate Heists, and we’ll explain why below.
In terms of ambitious vehicles, the Buzzard military helicopter is a good choice. It costs $ 1.75 million, so you’ll need to save a little bit, but it will allow you to quickly scour the map and provide firepower from the air.
There are reasons why you’ll want to quickly increase your ranking (i.e. your level) when starting GTA Online. Going up a few ranks, characters like Simeon and Lamar will contact you for missions through your phone, giving you more ways to unlock cash and RP, GTA’s version of experience points.
Weapon purchases are also tied to your rank. If you want to buy a Micro SMG from a gun store, for example, you need to be rated 5 first. So it’s worth trying to get through those early levels quickly.
2. GTA Online Heists are a great way to make money and the most fun part of the game.
GTA has five Heists (including a Tutorial Heist), and if you’re new to the game, you owe it to yourself to check them out. They’re like the heists in the main story of GTA 5, but they involve four players simultaneously participating in a mission. They still represent the best GTA experiences you can get in any game in the series.
To access Heists, you must either join another player’s Heist or reach level 12 in the game and host your own. Most importantly, you’ll want three other friends to play with Heists (you can pair up, but it’s precarious, and playing all four Heists with the same crew earns you a bonus). Hope it won’t be too much of a challenge if you know of other people who have grabbed the game for free and have half decent PCs.
One of your party of four will need what’s called a high-end apartment in GTA Online, which apparently born come with the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack. This is how you host a heist. You can purchase this by opening your in-game phone, going to the internet browser, and clicking on Money & Services. Dynasty 8 is the online store that sells in-game apartments.
The cheapest apartment to offer a heist room is Del Perro Heights, which costs $ 200,000, easily covered by the free money offered by Rockstar with this version of the game. Again, to host a heist, you need to be at rank 12 or higher. It’s not a bad idea for all players involved to reach at least Rank 12, to make sure everyone is up to the challenge of these large-scale missions.
With three other players in your crew, you can enter the heist room in your new apartment and begin these mission streams. Each Heist is broken down into separate setup stages with a finale, and you get a first bonus payout for completing them all (and another for completing them in order). Note that each heist has an installation cost, which you can easily afford if you haven’t spent all of your free millions of dollars in in-game currency at once.
You will easily recover this configuration after completing each of them. As you delve deeper into the game, you may also think about taking on the Doomsday and Diamond Casino Heists, but for now you need to worry about the basic Heists. Repeating them on higher difficulties earns you bigger payouts.
If you are a single player, Heists are a less reliable source of income and you might want to try this excellent Reddit guide while playing GTA alone.
3. Don’t bother with competitive modes unless they pay double for experience and money
GTA Online has so many competitive online modes (known as adversarial modes), but they’re rarely as fun as doing open-world activities with friends. Still, there are reasons you’ll want to play it, especially if you’re new to the game.
Each week, Rockstar usually highlights a certain Adversary Mode with double the rewards (not this week, however, as the double bonus is for the sell gun missions). This will allow you to quickly increase your rank and earn some extra cash while you participate. Find the messages on your phone that invite you to opposing modes and click on them to access a matchmaking screen.
Again, they’re only really worth focusing on when the payout is doubled. Don’t burn yourself out in PvP as that isn’t the best part of GTA Online, although some modes can be quite fun.
4. You can have your cars delivered at any time
It’s far from a title feature, but it’s handy to know in case you miss the game’s explanation of how it works. Bring your phone, click the mechanic’s name in your contacts, call them and you can have one of your stored vehicles brought to you, usually just a few steps from where you are. You’ll use this countless times while playing GTA to save time, and it’s worth knowing.
5. Strangers will try to upset you, so activate passive mode
Mourning is almost built into the design of GTA Online. If you want to explore Los Santos without other players being able to ruin it for you, press ‘M’ on your keyboard to bring up what’s called the Interactions menu. From there, scroll down to Passive Mode and turn it on. This will prevent players from shooting at you. Note, however, that many activities in GTA Online require you to play on a public server and turn off passive mode.
Interrupting the fun of other players is the lifeblood of GTA Online, and you’ll end up doing that yourself, too. That’s why it’s such a relief on those rare occasions when you find an empty server, so you can make some extra cash without the threat of someone hitting you by plane during a mission.
So this is a temporary fix, but it will make the act of exploring the world a little less irritating in your first few hours with the game.
6. Resist buying Shark cards unless you dive into the game
Everything in GTA Online can be paid for with in-game currency, but making money takes time in this game, especially if you want to buy some of the more sophisticated vehicles that cost millions of dollars in the game. Rockstar sells in-game currency in the form of Shark Cards, which gives you a quick cash injection to get you what you want. You don’t need to buy them to have a good time in GTA Online.
If you spend hours and hours in GTA Online, maybe you can justify spending a little every now and then on whatever car, business or apartment you want, especially since you’ve gotten the game for free on Epic. Ultimately, however, purchasing digital currency is unlikely to improve your gaming experience unless you play it all the time.
7. Focus on the activities you enjoy
When you start GTA Online, it may be necessary to adjust the new status quo. There is so much to do on the map and you are constantly informed of new activities on your phone. Not everything is great about the game, but you don’t have to play everything to have a good time.
Owning a nightclub isn’t as much fun as it should be, for example, although the real DJs who play there have a cool touch. Owning a hangar is really neat, especially with some of the customizable planes available, but it’s a very expensive chase that shouldn’t be your priority right from the start. Some of the vehicles you can buy look awesome, but earning enough currency to unlock them can take hours and hours.
Heists are clearly the star of GTA Online in terms of the early game fun. Some of the different companies you can buy make have fun activities associated with them depending on what they are (and this free edition should give you plenty of businesses to sample), but there’s also a lot of driving from side to side of the map. other for so many missions in the game.
Try not to fall into a pattern where you feel stuck in a grind.
Over the last few years, Rockstar has become more and more generous giving free money in GTA, just to log in for a certain period. Earlier this year, he donated $ 2 million just for turning the game on twice in two weeks. Keep an eye on Rockstar Games social media for any similar promotions. They are not this regular, but they’ll usually happen a few times a year, and if you’re new to the game, that’ll be enough money to make a serious difference. You can let them pile up and buy a silly vehicle that you really want.
Rockstar is currently offering $ 500,000 to all players who log in in May 2020.
