Installing Minecraft mods opens up your game to a world of endless possibilities. But how do you install Minecraft mods? What is Minecraft Forge? This guide will answer all of these questions and more, so you can run the best Minecraft mods in no time.
Before taking action, it’s worth thinking about the different types of mods available. Do you want a new skin pack to freshen things up? Do you have a great PC? Why not take some killer lighting and realistic water mods? Tired of pigs grazing on the ground? With mods, you could make them fly! Why you would want to do this, we have no idea, but hey, more options are always a good thing.
Want to make your copy of Minecraft even bigger? Then read on for our easy steps on how to install Minecraft mods.
1. How to download Minecraft Forge
This is the most important part of installing Minecraft mods. Mods will not work in normal Minecraft, so we need a special version designed for modding.
Head to the Minecraft Forge website and download the version of Forge compatible with the mods you have chosen.
If the mod you have is for version 1.15.2, download Forge version 1.15.2.
If you are on Chrome, it may indicate that Forge is a virus. Don’t hesitate to ignore it, however. Simply click on the Java file once downloaded and install it.
2. Using different versions of Forge
If, for example, your chosen mod is for version 1.12, you will need to manually add it to Minecraft after you download and install it.
To do this, open the Minecraft launcher and click on “installations”. Then click on “ new ” and there should be a drop-down list that, when clicked, not only shows all of the different previous iterations of Minecraft, but also your versions of Forge that you downloaded.
Click on the desired forge and save it, then the launcher will download the corresponding version.
Then just go back to the main screen with “ play ”, and on the left is another drop-down where you can select which version of Forge you want to play.
3. Find your Minecraft mods folder
Load Minecraft as you normally would. Once you reach the main title screen, the one where you create a new world or play with options, there should be an option marked “mods”. Click on it.
Next, find where it says “open mods folder”. You can access it through Windows Explorer, but our method is much, much easier.
4. Installation of Minecraft mods
Close Minecraft while leaving your mods folder open. Now you are going to want to venture out onto the internet and download the mod (s) that you are looking for. We’ll get into the safety of that in a second, but for now just grab what you need and what you think is safe.
Download the mods for your chosen versions of Minecraft and once they are uploaded move the files to the mods folder.
That’s it! You are now free to load your version of Minecraft Forge, click on the mods, and check if they are active. Wasn’t it nice and easy?
5. Consider the source of the mods
OK, this is not as much of a step as it is a general warning. Be very careful who you get your Minecraft mods to. While there are several trusted sites out there, it only takes one bad egg to download a mod with some sort of virus attached.
The best way to check if something is safe is to read comments or watch videos on YouTube uploaded by someone who is not the creator of the mod.
It is also worth checking whether the creator is known. Do they have lots of followers who will vouch for them? Would a virus ruin their Minecraft careers?
Always think before you start the download. No mod is worth wreaking havoc on your CPU because a clown wants to mine Bitcoin.
